History of TreeTops & Treats Guest House
In the 1920's, statesman and politician in the Hertzog cabinet, Oswald Pirow, built his residence on this site, high up on the slope of Muckleneuk Ridge with panoramic views of the Capital City, Pretoria. The original residence consisted of three adjacent thatched huts.
Gerard Moerdijk, the famous architect
who among others designed the Voortrekker
Monument, married Pirow's daughter and
bought a piece of the original property
from his father-in-law and built his first
residence on it. The Moerdijk family lived
next door from 1924 till 1954, and
today the magnificent house
is a heritage site.
Meanwhile, the Pirow family sold this property.
Inspired by the 'maestro's' design next door, the
new owners in the 1960's added a kitchen and
dining room to the three thatched huts and soon
thereafter also built the outbuildings.
Muckleneuk became increasingly sought-after for especially embassies, and the
property soon required a further facelift
to blend in with the area. It was then
that, before selling it, the house was transformed
into a double-storey, still with a thatched roof, cleverly
preserving the original 'opstal' huts in the design.
In 2003, we discovered this unique and tranquil
home with its enchanting ambience. Falling in love
with it instantly, we also recognised its vast
untapped potential. This was just the setting for
a guest house! With much dedication and tender
loving care, the homestead was restored to its
former glory. In 2005, the outbuildings were
transformed into the Egyptian and Cat's
Whiskers Garden Suites and the Conference Venue.
Today, TreeTops & Treats is reputedly better than
'home', with an appeal rarely found in the hospitality
industry. The Guest House consists of two exquisite
suites, each offering unsurpassed comfort, ambience
& hospitality. Facilities include a communal bar
and a swimming pool, both situated in the tranquil
garden. Guests can also lounge in the lapa.
Services include internet access, therapeutic
massages, a fully equipped conference venue, a group
facilitator/ trainer, an in-house décor specialist, and
catering facilities for small workshops, weddings
and other intimate occasions.
